Caleb: What’s the worst advice you were given growing up?
Kate: Follow your dreams. Want it bad, and work hard for it. The world is your oyster.
Caleb: Really? That doesn’t seem like bad advice at all. Quite the contrary, in fact.
Kate: It sounds nice, but it’s terrible advice for artists. In a day and age where the arts are being defunded, artists devalued and considered lazy people who need a “real job,” and the only measure for success is monetary gain, someone should have told me to go to nursing school if I want to eat and pay my bills. Settle for status quo and pursue your hopes and dreams on the side.
Caleb: That’s bleak.
Kate: That’s reality.
